The Kher Reach — a guide for new arrivals

Far to the east of the Old Shore, across a sea that most captains will not cross, lies the Kher Reach: the lands of a kingdom that burned in a single night three hundred years ago. Its survivors built Oradin, the White Stair, a city of seven terraces cut into a limestone cliff, and every dusk since then they have lit seven lamps and said their city's name aloud, so that it would never be forgotten the way Kher was.

For three centuries nothing answered from the east. Now something has.

This guide takes you from the harbour of Venore to the Throne of Ash. It is written for someone who has never set foot on the continent. Read the first two pages before you sail; come back to the others when you reach them.

What you will find

Region What it is Level
Oradin The only city of the east: temple, depot, bank, shops, the five vocation masters, houses and guildhalls. Under it: the Undercroft (catacombs) and the Salt Mines. any
The western countryside The Lantern Road, the Lampfields, the village of Millbridge, the Longmead pastures and the Greyfold Hills. Peaceful for now. any
The Outer March The desert just outside Oradin's east wall, up to a line of fallen basalt pillars. Home of the Guardians' Row. No Gaze here. 300–400
The Middle March and the Brine Shelf The grey sea of ash dunes and ruins, and the dead coast of the Hush. Level-500 hunting under the weak Gaze. 500
The Deep March The far east of the desert, under the full Gaze of the Nameless King. The three Waystones and the road to the Mourngate. 1000
The Hollow Crown The dead king's mountain-fortress behind the Mourngate: the Sunken Archive, the Great Hall, the Chain Stair, the Wyrm Pit and the Throne of Ash. 1000

Map of the Kher Reach

Your first day, in ten steps

  1. Go to Venore. Every town of the Old Shore has a boat there.
  2. Do the access quest "Written Down West" (about 15 minutes, no fighting, no level needed): Captain Sallow at the end of the pier, Wilmot Crane the harbour clerk, and Amos Tull in Boozer's tavern. → Getting there
  3. Sail east for free (your first crossing is paid by the manifest). You land on the Greywater quay in Oradin.
  4. Walk east to the temple and find the depot (just west of the temple) and the bank (the Counting House, by the quay). → Oradin
  5. Promote, if you have not yet: each vocation master in Oradin promotes for 20,000 gold from level 20. Spells do not need to be learned from an NPC on this server.
  6. Learn where to sell: Oradin buys loot by category, like Rathleton. Quartermaster Pimm tells you who buys what if you say loot.
  7. Pick your hunting ground by level: the Undercroft (8–130), the Salt Mines (≈200), the Guardians' Row (300–400), the Middle March and the Brine Shelf (500), the Hollow Crown (1000). → Hunting grounds
  8. Read about the Gaze before you go east of the fallen pillars. It hurts every player who stands under the open sky. Shade protects you.
  9. At level 1000, start the main quest, The Hollow Crown, with Castellan Brannoc Vell at the top of the city. → The Hollow Crown, chapters 1-2
  10. Keep some gold in the bank. Oradin only takes as citizens those who have finished The Hollow Crown. Until then, if you die in the east, you wake up in your Old Shore temple and the trip back costs 180 gold.

Good to know

  • Talking to NPCs: say hi in the NPCs channel, then type the keywords shown in this style. Answers that matter are quoted in the guide.
  • Directions are given from Oradin's temple unless the text says otherwise. North is up on your map.
  • Experience values in the bestiary are base values, before the server's experience rate and stages.
  • Spoilers: the Hollow Crown pages contain the full solution of every chapter, including the name that opens the Mourngate. The walkthroughs are folded; open them only when you want to.
  • Still to come: the city of Tallowmere, the sunken city of Kher (Low Town and Foundry), the sea caves of the Brine Shelf, the ruins of the Deep March, the open-air hunts west of Oradin and the boss under the Salt Mines. This guide will grow with the continent.
