Oradin and the countryside

Oradin — the White Stair

Oradin is a city of white limestone built in seven terraces up the side of a cliff called the Pale Shelf. It is the last named place before the desert. A central staircase, the Stair, joins the terraces:

Level Terraces What's there
Ground floor T1 (lowest, south) and T2 (north, through the inner wall) quay, temple, depot, bank, taverns, shops, Wardens' Yard, market, gates, walls
One floor up T3 (south half) and T4 (north half) Scriptorium, magic shop, Wrights' workshop, the two guildhalls, Physic Garden, House of Empty Hands
Two floors up T5 and T6 the Lamplighters' chapter with the Great Lamp, the Castellan's hall with the Empty Chair
Three floors up T7 a small lookout at the very top

Map of Oradin

The Stair starts just east of the temple and climbs north. Inside the city, only the temple, the depot, the houses and the quay are protection zones. Oradin is a normal PvP town.

Arrival

You step off at the Greywater quay, on the western edge of the bottom terrace, where the river meets the city. A sign reads "GREYWATER - Drinkable. Eventually." Captain Sallow stands at the quay for the trip home.

From the quay, walk east:

  • the Counting House (bank) is right beside the quay, a little south-east;
  • the depot is a little further east, north of the bank;
  • the temple is about 40 steps east of the quay.

Key places (bottom terrace, T1)

  • Spells: this server does not require you to learn spells from an NPC. Every spell of your vocation is available once you reach its level. Saying spells to a master gets a line of lore, not a list.
  • All guild buildings are open to every visitor.

Townsfolk (talk only). They are worth a chat: each one hints at something going on in the city.

Below the city you will find Pitwarden Aldous Crail in the Salt Mines and Lamplighter Anselm in the Undercroft.

  • Odo Marrowbone also buys a deserter's name-tag for 1,800 gp, one at a time (say name-tag). That is more than Emmet Fettle pays.

  • The Scriptorium has two books to read: On Words That Burn (in the reading room) and the Roll of Oradin. Read the margins of the Roll carefully.

The countryside and side content

The Lantern Road leaves Oradin by the West Gate and runs north through the Lampfields. It is lit by the Lamplighters' stone lamps. Signposts mark every fork. No monsters roam the west yet, so it makes a good first walk.

Road signs you will meet

Fork Sign
North of Oradin, on the Lantern Road "North-west: the Lampfields. / North-east: Millbridge. / South: Oradin."
South edge of Millbridge "South: the Longmead. / North-west: Millbridge."
North-west of Millbridge "North-east: Thurgh's Cut. / West: Tallowmere. / South-east: Millbridge."
Further west "North: the Greyfold Hills. / South-west: Tallowmere. / East: Millbridge."
Far east, on the King's Road "South-west: the Brine Road. / North: Oradin. / East: the Deep March."

Tallowmere is not open yet. The road stops short of it.

Millbridge

A village of six houses where the Lantern Road crosses the Greywater. It is about 180 steps north of Oradin: leave by the West Gate, then follow the Lantern Road north and take the north-east branch at the first fork.

NPC Where What they offer
Hob Grist, the miller At the mill, by the water wheel Talk: mill, nan, job
Nan Wexley Outside Wexley Cottage, facing the Keeping Pond Talk: pond / keeping, pebble, families (also ashby, denby), oradin
Jory Coombe, bargeman Coombe house, by the barge jetty Talk: barge, greywater. He does not carry passengers. "We carry flour, not folk."

Things to do

  • The Keeping Pond. Every morning Nan drops a pebble into the millpond and says "Millbridge". That is the village's naming ritual: "that's not religion, dear, that's housekeeping."
  • Read "The Keeping", Nan's book on the shelf in Wexley Cottage.
  • Houses: Ashby house and Denby house stand on the east bank. The families moved to Oradin "for the lamps". Both houses can be bought: 1 bed each, listed rent 51,000 gp, town Oradin.
  • The Longmead pasture lies just south of the village. Only sheep live there.

The Greyfold Hills — Old Pardew's cave

The hills rise west and north-west of Millbridge. Old Pardew, a hermit who draws old maps, lives in a cave on the south face of a hill about 50 steps west of Millbridge. Go in at the cave mouth, take the ramp down, and follow the gallery to his room.

Keyword What happens
trade "One map. Fifty gold. It'll be wrong by the time you get home, but it'll be wrong beautifully." He sells one item: a map, for 50 gp. It is a decorative map you can hang on a wall in your house. It has no text and no quest use.
maps, greyfold, cyclops, job Lore

North of the hills are Thurgh's Cut (the cyclopes' quarry, with a sign at its mouth) and the road west toward Tallowmere. No hunting grounds are open there yet.

The Brine Shelf — Orla Keck, the salt-raker (for level 500 or so)

On the coast south-east of the city, past the end of the cliff, lies the dead sea called the Hush. Orla Keck rakes salt there and buys what the Hush leaves on the shore, paying more than Oradin.

  • How to get there: leave Oradin by the Cinder Postern (free) into the Outer March. Follow the King's Road east, past the line of fallen basalt pillars into the Middle March. At the signpost, take "South-west: the Brine Road" down to the coast. Her Salt Harvesters' hut is near the shore.
  • This is level-500 country. The road runs close to 500-level hunting grounds, and in the open the Gaze slowly hurts you (see The Gaze).
  • What she buys: see the price table above. She pays +25% over Oradin on most Kher Reach products and +50% on salt of Kher and brine pearls. She does not buy deserter's name-tags.
  • Talk: trade, salt, pearl, sea, hush, price, job.

Sallow's Folly. Further along the shore lies the stranded hull of the captain's first ship, Sallow's Folly. You can walk inside it. Drowned sailors (Hushed Sailors) now haunt it. Only inside the wreck they can drop a waterlogged logbook page: a page of the old logbook, signed "O. Sallow, master". Read it if you did Written Down West.

Readables you can loot

Item Where it drops Notes
unsent letter Kher Deserters (Middle March) Each letter shows one of six texts, picked when you first read it. Cannot be sold.
waterlogged logbook page Hushed Sailors, only inside Sallow's Folly Lore of the access quest. Cannot be sold.
